Wzdow

Wzdow is a village in Poland, 150 km southeast of Krakow, close to Poland's borders with Slovakia and the Ukraine. In 1794, Teresa Potocki sold the property of Wzdow to Michal Ostaszewski (1726-1816). Later, the lands of Wzdow were owned by Sebastian Ostaszewski (1755-1826), Teofil Ostaszewski (1807-1889) and Adam Ostaszewski (1860-1934). The palace at Wzdow would serve as the seat the Polish noble family of Ostoja-Ostaszewski during the 19th century. After the expropriation of landlords in Poland by the new communist regime installed in the country in 1944, the palace fell into ruin. Following the suppression of the January Uprising of 1863-1864, the grounds became the site of an "underground" school, the Peasants' University (Uniwersytet Ludowy).
