[edit] 93.5 The Beach/WZBH's History
WZBH came along in the late 1980's after formerly being a top 40 formatted station known as "SEA 93" with the call letters WSEA. 93.5 The Beach was formed with the WZBH call letters and the slogan "Delmarva's Home of Rock and Roll." In the early 90's WZBH's status of being the sole rock signal in the market ended when 97.1 the Fox (Classic Rock) and the original x106.9 (Alternative) signed on to cover Delmarva, (And also in 1999 96 Rock was formed on 95.9). In the early 90's WZBH was playing Mainstream Rock with a Classic Rock focus (Metallica after 7pm and Boston & AC/DC all day). The jocks included the Flakes in AM drive, Sam Chase 10-3, Cepth Michaels (also PD) 3-7 and BBW (Bad Billy Warner) 7-mid, Paul Mckall mid-6am. Due to the new competition, the station saw a decline in ratings. The Flakes and BBW departed their dayparts respectively in the mid to late 90's, and KT Harris from Q105 was hired to do mornings with Paul from overnights. John Allen was hired to take over 7-mid. Shortly thereafter, around mid 94, Cepth was let go and Murph was hired from 97.1 The Fox to do afternoons and John Allen was promoted to PD. Paul was quickly moved to evenings, John Allen to PM Drive and Murph paired with KT in AM Drive. Murph hosted the morning show for the next 10 years. Around 1999, John quit and Murph was given the PD gig. There were several airstaff incarnations over the next 8 years.
- Mornings: For over 10 years it was Murph & (lots of other people) KT, Andy, Starbucks, Reed, Maggie, Gino, Nicole, John, Jim, Miki Hunter (twice), Cowboy, Sparx, and Hurley. Then after Murph left in July of 2005, it was Quinn with Sparx and Hurley. Then in late 2005 Rexx and Smitty were brought aboard and handled mornings for over a year until January of 2007, now it is Chris Steele and JT...Midday's: Sam Chase (twice), Val, Amy F, Amy G, Miki Hunter, "Nasty Lil" Julie, Dixie, and now Megan...Afternoons: John, Amelia (currently AM drive at WIYY in Balto) Glassman, Aaron, Todd, Mark, Stacey. Miki, Chris Steelem and currently "Crank"... Nights: Paul, Rick Kelly, Skip Dixxon, Glassman, Cowboy, Karen, Dixie, Sparx, Chris Steele, LP, and now Pat...Overnights: Thor, The Colonel, Cowboy, Glassman, Silvia, Ian Mckay, Justin, Fester, Lee Ving, Diggs, Neil, Megan, and currently "Nerd Face"...
- The morning show and Murph in the PD role eventually led the way for a comeback. Murph & KT pulled good numbers, Murph and John pulled better numbers and the other dayparts slowly began to revive. When Murph, Reed and Maggie hosted the morning show the station dominated the market, they did however have soem competition from 96 Rock at the time with "Mancow's Morning Madhouse." At that time the other Dayparts were equally strong. Sam Chase 10-3, Amelia 3-7, and Cowboy 7-mid. Reed left the station in September of 2001, and the morning show was re-invented with Murph, Miki & Cowboy and pulled great numbers generally #1 or #2 12 + and always # 1 with men and adult demo's. The team stayed together until July of 2005. Murph and Cowboy left the station and Miki became PD. She stayed in that role until October of 2006. Sean Mchugh is now the PD and in charge of the current staff.
