Wyre, Orkney
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wyre is one of the Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland, lying south-east of Rousay.
The small, but inhabited, island has two ancient monuments maintained by Historic Scotland (open at all times):
- Cubbie Roo's Castle, built in about 1150, possibly the oldest castle in Scotland, and mentioned in the Orkneyinga Saga.
- the nearby roofless, but largely complete, twelfth century St Mary's Chapel.
Wyre is also known for its grey and common seals, and for the poet Edwin Muir (1887-1959), born on the island. Orkney Ferries sail from the island to Tingwall on the Orkney Mainland, Egilsay and Rousay.
