Wyld

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wyld is cosmological entity within White Wolf Game Studios' fictional setting, the World of Darkness.

Within the World of Darkness, three fundamental drives exist as quasi-sentient superbeings. These drives are manifest by the Wyrm, which embodies destruction, corruption and decay; the Weaver, which embodies order, stasis, and immutability; and lastly the Wyld, which embodies the forces of creation, fecundity, mutation, magic and madness. None of these powers are considered innately good or evil, rather it is considered best that the three be maintained in a healthy stalemate.

According to the storyline, the world once existed in a powerful age of fantasy and magic (for more information on this fictional prehistoric age see the Exalted setting) but a cosmological imbalance resulted in the Weaver running rampant, binding and driving mad the Wyrm and all but banishing the Wyld to a few bright sparks here and there, relegating the world to a dry, gray place ruled over by scientific laws by and large without the freedom or whimsy of magic--a world of darkness.

The last remaining true servants of the Wyld in the world were the Changelings: faerie souls forced to seek shelter by melding themselves with the souls of young children, mostly losing all identity but retaining a fragment of the glamour of their lost Arcadia; the faerie realm, which shut itself off from the world long ago. Within the Umbra, cosmological worlds separated by a spiritual barrier from our physical world, there still existed free Wyld spirits and entire realms dedicated to this force of nature. For more information on the Changelings see Changeling: The Dreaming.

This setting all came to an end in the cataclysmic Time of Judgement though the specifics were left for individuals to piece together.
