This page is about the public television station in Waycross, Georgia. For the computer graphics format, see Wide XGA.
WXGA-TV channel 8, part of the GPB network, is licensed to Waycross, Georgia. It serves the southeastern corner of the state, including the lower portions of the Georgia Atlantic Coast and the Okefenokee Swamp, from a transmitter located near Waycross; the signal travels in about a 50-mile radius from the transmitter site.
[edit] History
On November 6, 1961, WXGA-TV channel 8 signed on as Georgia's third educational television station, following Atlanta's WETV (now WPBA-TV) and Athens' WGTV.
In 2001 WXGA began digital transmission on channel 9. However, since its sister station WVAN-TV in Savannah broadcasts its analog signal on channel 9, WXGA-TV can only broadcast its signal at a low power, of only 20 kilowatts. Unless it changes digital channels, it is unikely that GPB will boost WXGA's digital power until the analog shutdown in 2009.
