WXEL-TV is the PBS member station in the Palm Beach market, licensed to West Palm Beach. WXEL is owned by Barry University, a Catholic university based in Miami; despite the Catholic-based ownership, WXEL shows no religious programming (other than documentaries provided by PBS). In addition, Barry also owns public radio station WXEL (FM) 90.7.

WXEL is one of at least two PBS members owned and operated by a Catholic-related organisation (WLAE-TV in New Orleans, Louisiana is the other), and one of at least three run by a religious organisation in general (counting Provo, Utah's KBYU-TV).

Barry University has recently announced that WXEL-TV-FM will be purchased by Educational Broadcasting Corporation, owners of WNET and WLIW, in cooperation with Community Broadcast Foundation of Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast, a volunteer organization supporting public broadcasting in South Florida. The WXEL call sign was previously used on channel 8 in Cleveland, Ohio, on what is now WJW.
