[edit] History

The station began broadcasting in 1968. In 1971, it switched call letters to WEZF-TV to match its sister FM radio station, but in 1978, it switched back to WVNY.

WVNY was the host station for the 1980 Winter Olympics and the famous Miracle on Ice between the United States and the Soviet Union.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, WVNY dropped ABC's General Hospital in favor of cartoons, and aired Boston Red Sox baseball games on Friday nights. Viewers could still see General Hospital on CFCF in Montreal. For a time, WVNY even aired CFL footbal games. During the 1990s, the station frequently dropped network programming in favor of infomercials. As a result, several ABC shows were never seen in Montreal. Recently, it began pre-empting Jimmy Kimmel Live. Since the Canadian rights are owned by CHUM Limited, that show has never been seen in Montreal, but this may change with CTVglobemedia's purchase of CHUM.

After a long hiatus, WVNY opened a news department in 1999. However, due to financial considerations, news production was shut down in September of 2003.

In 2004, WVNY became a sister station to WFFF, the area's primary FOX and secondary WB affiliate after Lambert Broadcasting acquired WVNY and entered into a joint sales agreement with Smith Media, LLC, the owners of WFFF. Smith moved WVNY into WFFF's Colchester facility.

An announcement came in late 2005 that Smith Media was planning to start a news department for WVNY and WFFF. However, as of September of 2006, no details had been announced about a launch. To complicate things, WFFF picked up secondary relations with the new CW network on September 18, 2006, after The WB folded.
