Write Where It Hurts is the thirteenth and final episode of the second series of Daria.
[edit] Plot Summary
Mr. O'Neill gives a class assignment on moral fiction, but this poses a problem for Daria since she's read every book on his reading list. So instead he gives her the task of writing a story using people from everyday life.
Her first try at a story is mainly a rip-off of The Graduate, which features Kevin getting out of his marriage to Brittany and running off with Jane on his wedding day. Her second try is mainly a rip-off of Sense and Sensibility with Daria and Quinn as the main characters.
Helen tries to help Daria get over her writer's block, but her conversation leads to her comparing Daria to Quinn. Daria, angered that her mother would compare her situation to her brain-dead sister's problems, walks off. So she tries again, her third try is about Helen and Jake, relaxed and laid-backed, and how they manage to penalize Quinn about how she isn't as deep or intelligent as Daria.
After trying again, this time making a medieval fantasy-style story starring Helen as power-hungry warrior and Jake as a toothless hag, Daria confronts Mr. O'Neill and asks for a different assignment. Instead, he gives her a plot element to work with. Now her story has to involve a game of cards.
When she's completely convinced that she has no talent, Helen manages to help Daria a bit by telling her that she should write a story that's true, and that describes how she'd want the world around her to be like. So Daria writes a story that takes place in the future.
In her story, Daria is a successful writer for a magazine and is married to a teacher named Marcello. Helen is retired from the law firm, Jake is much more relaxed since his triple-bypass surgery (but apparently is starting to forget things more easier), and Quinn is a responsible and mature parent of four. Jake invites Daria and Quinn to the house one day for a family card game of hearts, and the story ends with Daria happily joining in.
When she shows her story to Helen, she is so moved she bursts into tears and hugs Daria.
