Wren to the Rescue is a story by Sherwood Smith that she first wrote in high school, in the mid-sixties. It is about an orphan whose best friend is a princess. Wren makes friends with a student in a magic school (which she later attends) but first she has to rescue her friend from kidnapping. Along the way she gets to turn into a dog.
[edit] Plot introduction
As with it's sequels, and the Crown and Court Duet, the events take place on Sartorius-deles in the Erhal system. Though though this is not mentioned directly in any of the books.[citation needed]
[edit] Plot summary
We are introduced to the story when Wren, living in a Stradi orphanage, is informed by her best friend, Tess that Tess is in fact the only child of Verne and Arstan Rhisadel, the King and Queen of Meldrith. Moreover, Tess is under threat from King Andreaus of Senna Lirwan of being taken captive as revenge actions of her father, namely, for her father's convincing Idress Rhiscarlan to defect from Andreaus' nation.
Having not seen their daughter for any extended period in her life, the king and queen plan to take the chance that Andreaus has lost interest in making good on his threat, and thus they intend to have Tess return to Cantrimoor. Wren is offered the opportunity to join Tess in doing so.
The plan fails, however, as a Lirwani agent is able to easily infiltrate the service staff of the palace in Cantrimoor, and is also successful in abducting Tess without intimidate detection.
