Wreckx-N-Effect

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wreckx-N-Effect was a New Jack Swing Hip-Hop Duo who had the major hit "Rump Shaker", in 1992 which was produced by Teddy Riley.

The group, originally composed of Markell Riley, Brandon Mitchell, Aquil Davidson and Keith "K.C." Harris, was formed around 1988 as "Wrecks-N-Effect", and their first release was an EP (extended play) LP consisting of 6 tracks they recorded for the Atlantic record label. It included "Go For What You Know", a self-titled song ( which sampled Jimmy Castor's "Bertha Butt Boogie" and the excellent, Let's Do It Again (which sampled The Staple Singers hit song) but, unfortunately, received little promotion, resulting in their leaving Atlantic Records and changing the spelling of their name to reflect their "new jack swing" backgound. When they released their self-titled debut album the following year, "K.C." had left and they became a trio. The album was produced by producer/songwriter Teddy Riley, who was Markell's brother, and Brandon's half brother. It reached #16 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and #103 on The Billboard Top 200 chart, while its singles Juicy and New Jack Swing had a similar fate. Unfortunately, Brandon was killed, shortly after its release, in a shooting.

The group, then composed of only Markell and Aquil, followed up their first album with Hard Or Smooth in 1992. Hard Or Smooth fared better than the first album, reaching #6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and #9 on The Billboard Top 200 chart, and producing the hit single "Rump Shaker" (#2). Its accompanying video went on to get a lot of heat for its showing of half naked women. "Rump Shaker", is also relevant for the verse that future member of The Neptunes, Pharrell Williams, contributed in addition to he and Chad both producing the track.

Wreckx-N-Effect had then reached their peak after the release their long delayed third album Rap's New Generation in 1996. The album flopped and not long after that, the group disbanded.

In October 2004 New Jack Swing appeared in popular videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on R&B, Soul radio station CSR 103.9.
