Rhineura floridana Baird, 1859 |
The Worm Lizard or (Rhineura floridana) is a North American member of the family Amphisbaenidae. It is sometimes called a Thunderworm because it tends to emerge from its burrows after a heavy shower. It can be found on the Florida peninsula and is 18–35 cm (7–12 inches) long.
It has no limbs or external eyes and ears and creates a burrow in soil sand or leaf mold. It will back into this burrow tail first when disturbed.
