WorldsAway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WorldsAway was an 2D virtual community in which users were represented as avatars. It was an English version of Fujitsu's Habitat II, a successor of Habitat (video game). WorldsAway was launched through CompuServe in 1995, moved to the Internet in 1997, and continues as an independent service, VZones, which is owned by Stratagem Corporation.
While other online graphical communities such as Active Worlds took a 3D approach, WorldsAway was 2D, very similar to The Palace. Unlike The Palace, users could not import their own graphics into the system, but rather purchased and exchanged items in a way simliar to the economic systems of MMORPGs today.
WorldsAway's software was also used for a gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual communitiy called Pride! Universe. All Compuserve users could access both, but Pride! was run independent and separately.
