(1990)

Mariah's self-titled debut album was released on June 12, 1990 and entered Billboard's Top 200 at number 80. It slowly rose to the top and stayed there for 11 weeks. "Mariah Carey" yielded four number 1 hits and has sold 9 million copies in the USA alone.

Here's what Mariah had to say about the album: "Reflecting upon the events and circumstances that led me here, I feel extremely fortunate that I have completed my debut album at this stage of my life. My earliest memory is of wanting to be a singer as I watched my mother rehearse when she was a soloist with city opera, and while growing up music was a major part of my life. There was always different types of music playing in the house - whether it was my mother playing Billie Holiday, my older sister playing the Jackson 5 and Aretha Franklin, or my older brother playing Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix."

"Mariah Carey" has sold 17 million copies worldwide to date, and has received certifications in many countries: 44x Platinum and 7x Gold.

Music Box (1993)
Music Box
(1993)

"MTV Unplugged" had proved a profitable diversion, both commercially and artistically, but the time was now right for Mariah to re-enter the mainstream. The chosen vehicle was "Music Box (album)", released on September 17, 1993. It was her third full-length release in four years and the one which took her back to the top of the album listings.

The album became one of her biggest selling albums to date. The album was certified Diamond, shipping ten million copies in the US and an astounding thirty million copies worldwide.

But why the title? "The beautiful tinkling sound that comes out of a music box is so pretty and so delicate. I love it."

"Music Box" has sold 30 million copies worldwide to date ([http://mariahcarey.com/news/bio.php), and has received certifications in many countries: - Platinum and - Gold. 120x Platinum

[edit] Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas (1994)
Merry Christmas
(1994)

"Merry Christmas (Mariah Carey album)" was very reminiscent of the early 1960s girl groups who made Phil Spector's legendary Christmas album "A Christmas gift to you". Indeed, it featured Darlene Love's "Christmas (baby please come home)" among a selection of tracks weighted towards the traditional: "Hark the herald angels sing", "Silent night", "God rest ye merry, gentlemen" and more. "Merry Christmas" also contained three new Carey-Afanasieff compositions: "All I want for Christmas is you", "Miss you most (at Christmas time)" and "Jesus born on this day". "Merry Christmas (Mariah Carey album)" certainly appaered set to do well in its first year, entering the Billboard chart at number 30 within two weeks of its release. The video for "All I want for Christmas is you", with Mariah romping in the previous winter's snow, was premiered on MTV with much hoopla on November 28. The song was not released as a single in the USA, but in Europe it reached the Top 10 in most countries.

"Merry Christmas (Mariah Carey album)" has sold over 16 million copies worldwide to date and has received certifications in many countries: - Platinum and - Gold.

[edit] Daydream

Daydream (1995)
Daydream
(1995)

"Daydream" showed a somewhat different Mariah, one who seemed to be distancing herself from the image created by "Music box". That album had been heavy on the ballads, which were still there on "Daydream", but not to the same extent. Instead, there was a leaner sound, a good deal of which seemed weighted toward R&B. "Fantasy" scored there, but so did "One Sweet Day", Mariah's collaboration with Boyz II Men, "Always Be My Baby", which teamed her with well-known hip-hop producer Jermaine Dupri, "Daydream interlude (Fantasy Sweet Dub Mix)", which she co-produced with club guru David Morales, and "Melt Away", a collaboration with the amazingly successful Babyface, a track Mariah produced herself.

The album was released on October 3, 1995 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200. It eventually sold over 10 million copies in the USA alone.

Daydream has sold an estimated 25 million copies worldwide to date (January 2006), and has received certifications in many countries: 1 Diamond 117x Platinum and 5x Gold.

[edit] #1's

#1's (1998)
#1's
(1998)

The album was released on November 17, 1998 and debuted at Number 4 on the Billboard 200 (which was also its peak). In the USA, #1's was awarded 5 times platinum.

In an open letter to the fans, Mariah wrote: "First of all - this is not a greatest hits album! It's too soon, I haven't been recording long enought for that! This album is a 'Thank you' and an acknowledgment of my gratitude to all of you out there for making these records #1 on the charts. One day, I will put out a greatest hits with songs that didn't even go on the charts because they were never commercially released (i.e., 'Breakdown', 'Underneath the stars', 'Butterfly', etc.) or songs that came out that didn't go to #1 that are, in my opinion, better than some that did (i.e., 'Make it happen', 'Anytime you need a friend', 'Endless love' with Luther, or 'Can't let go'). This is a tribute to my fans for all your love and support since day one. I chose the bonus tracks for various reasons. 'Sweetheart' - because I ain't got one! Try that one on! Ha ha. 'When you believe (from The prince of Egypt)' - because to me, it almost is a miracle that Whitney and I are on a record together! After meeting and working with Whitney Houston, I have gained a whole other layer of respect for this truly talented woman in so many ways. 'Whenever you call' with Brian McKnight - I feel that it was one of the best songs on the 'Butterfly' album and Brian's vocals made it so beautiful. 'I still believe' reminds me of the fact that not so long ago I was a teenage girl with nothing to my name but a demo tape, my voice and my ability to write songs. Brenda K. Starr treated me like a 'star' and gave me a shot as a back-up singer. This remake is my tribute to her. Thank you to everyone who's ever helped me out in any way, shape or form. Encouragement, support, dedication and friendship. You know who you are (especially you, mom). Thank you God for my life and the faith in you that has brought me this far. Love and thanks, Mariah."

"#1's" has sold over 15 million copies worldwide to date (January 2006), and has received certifications in many countries: 5x Diamond 80x Platinum 6x Gold

[edit] Glitter

Glitter (2001)
Glitter
(2001)

The album "Glitter", Mariah's first for her new record label Virgin, is also the soundtrack to her movie, "Glitter". Set in the '80s, "Glitter" tells the story of a young girl named Billie trying to make it in showbiz. Mariah has revealed "The record is ‘80s influenced to fit in with the movie, but I wanted to make it like 1982 meets 2002."

The album blends elements of funk and disco to create an '80s New York club feel, but it's brought up to date with collaborations from Mystikal, Busta Rhymes, Da Brat, Ludacris and R&B singer, Eric Benet. Unfortunately, Mariah's work with Prince was not finished in time to be included on the record, but his influence is felt on many of the up-tempo tracks.

"Glitter" has sold an estimated 4 million copies worldwide.

Greatest Hits
(2001)

On November 23, 2001, Columbia Records released Greatest Hits. This unique double album is a definitive career overview of one of the biggest selling recording artists of our time. It is one of her best-selling albums to date, and is considered by many music critics to be the official soundtrack of the 1990s because no other artist at that time was more influential to the pop music scene. It covers her most popular songs from all of Mariah Carey's Columbia Records releases - from her 1990 self titled debut album through 1999's Rainbow. In addition to all these, it also features duets with Luther Vandross, Trey Lorenz, Boyz II Men, Jay-Z, JD, Whitney Houston, Joe, 98 Degrees and an unreleased So So Def Remix with Jermaine Dupri and Lil Bow Wow." Unfortunately, this album was not the success Sony expected. It only debuted at number 52 on the Billboard album chart. In 2003 the album was certified platinum by the RIAA.

Greatest Hits has sold an estimated 3.5 million copies worldwide.

(2002)

"Charmbracelet", the first album on Mariah's MonarC Records, was released on November 20, 2002 in Japan and November 29 in Europe. The fans from the USA had to wait until December 3. A month earlier, the album was played for fans chosen by lottery and some press and radio people at the Hayden Planetarium.

In Japan, the album became a huge hit and stayed for many weeks at the first place of the charts. In the USA, it entered the Billboard 200 at number 3, selling 241,000 copies (her third biggest first week sales after The Emancipation Of Mimi's 404,000 and Rainbow's 323,000 respectively). In the rest of the world, the chart entries were less spectacular. In the UK, it failed to enter the top 50 and in Canada it only entered at number 30.

Charmbracelet has sold 3 million copies worldwide to date (Universal France 2003), and has received certifications in many countries: 10x Platinum, 9x Gold and 1x Silver.

The Emancipation Of Mimi
(2005)

"The Emancipation Of Mimi" notched the best opening sales week of her career. The album debuted at number 1 and moved 404,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Carey continues to work with today's top R&B and hip-hop producers, such as the Neptunes, who lend their signature production style to two tracks: 'To The Floor (featuring Nelly)' and 'Say Somethin' (featuring Snoop Dogg)'. The album's other featured guest is Twista, who shows up on 'One And Only'. The first single, 'It's Like That', is one of four songs co-produced by Mariah and Jermaine Dupri, along with 'Get Your Number', 'Shake It Off', and 'We Belong Together'. Fellow Def Jam artist Kanye West collaborates with Mariah on 'Stay The Night'. On other tracks she works with Scram Jones ('Your Girl'), Mahogany ('When I Feel It') and James Poyser ('Mine Again'). Three tracks are co-written and co-produced by Mariah and James "Big Jim" Wright (of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis' Flyte Tyme Productions), including 'I wish you knew', 'Circles', and 'Fly Like A Bird'."

"The Emancipation Of Mimi" has sold 10 million copies worldwide to date ([1]), and has received certifications in many countries: 22x Platinum and 12x Gold.
