[edit] The event
The Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between the 16th April to the 2nd May 1983.
The 1983 event is remembered for the first ever 147 maximum break at the Crucible. Canada's Cliff Thorburn recorded it during his epeci 13-12 second round victory over Terry Griffiths. At one stage, fellow countryman Bill Werbeniuk had stopped playing in order to view Thorburn's closing shots.
Thorburn also had an epic semi-final victory over Tony Knowles, finally winning 16-15 before losing to Steve Davis 6-18 in the final, the biggest margin of victory at that time.
