[edit] The event
The Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at two venues - the Middlesbrough Town Hall staged the top half of the draw and the Wythenshawe Forum, Manchester staged the bottom half and the final. It was the first world championship to be sponsored by Embassy which would last 30 years.
There was some controversy over the size of the pockets which didn't conform to the official standards on one of the tournament tables. The television lighting gantry also caused concerns for some of the players.
