This was the first World Championship to have the competition to a fortnight's play as it would stand today. Well known and future World Champions Cliff Thorburn and Dennis Taylor made their debuts this year. They played each other in the first round and Thorburn won 9-8. Some frames of the final was shown on BBC television. It was the first time the championship was shown on BBC television.
