Worker file manager
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Worker is a free lightweight file manager. It is based on X11 libraries, so it runs on virtually all Unix-like systems. Its look is inspired by the Directory Opus file manager, written for the Amiga computer system.
[edit] Features
Worker is an orthodox file manager; it has all features expected in such programs, plus some enhancements.
- Fast and lightweight.
- Dual-panel directory view.
- Unlimited number of configurable buttons.
- Built-in fast search, including search history.
- Support for many archive formats.
- Support for virtual filesystems via the avfs library.
- FTP support.
- One of the panels can be used for displaying file information or for image view (via the xli library), allowing instant preview of images.
- Can be used efficiently without the mouse, and has easily-remembered shortcuts for everything.
- Fully customizable from the graphical user interface.
- Very limited dependencies. Can be easily compiled from source.
[edit] Cons
- Old-looking application. Although Worker is an X-Window application, it is more close to a text-based file manager. Worker's appearance is minimalistic; it uses a limited set of widgets, and there are no icons or menus. Users of eye-candy file managers will be probably disappointed. This is clearly the price for Worker's speed and small memory footprint.
- Customization from the graphical user interface is different from other file managers, and may confuse the novice user, although this is not a serious problem.
- Limited mouse support. Mouse is mainly used for pressing buttons, and to access panel history. However, an experienced user does not need to use the mouse at all.
