Talk:World AIDS Day

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  1. How much of the "education" touted by the event organizers endorses abstinence and/or monogamous marriage as sure-fire ways to avoid getting infected?
  2. How much of all this hoopla is devoted to persuading HIV carriers to avoid spreading the disease to others?

I bet most of the message is the old, ineffective "spend more money to research a vaccine or cure" combined with "try to remember to wear a condom" -- while AIDS cases continue to skyrocket along with "AIDS awareness" campaign budgets.

What a crock: I don't believe these people actually care about lessening human misery - there must be an ulterior motive (like justifying fornication). --Uncle Ed 14:45, 2 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for sharing your fantasies. "These people" might well imagine that you cackle in glee each time a gay man dies a miserable or painful death. Such fantasies about motivation do little to shed light on AIDS, or Worlds AIDS Day, and do nothing to alleviate a worldwide pandemic disease that will kill millions more in the coming year. If you seriously want answers to your questions, you will find them in the literature that these people make available... and if you actually read the content - rather than fantasize about it - you will find that preventing spread of the disease is one of their foremost concerns. • Actually, Uncle Ed, if you read this article, the HIV and the AIDS articles, you will see that abstinence is promoted in the ABC approach, and that CNN also addresses the problems faced by monogamous partners married to polygamous partners. However, thankfully, not everyone in this world is as narrow-minded as yourself when it comes to AIDS awareness, the problems HIV causes and the solutions that can be offered. --Bob 21:55, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Theme

the theme for world AIDs day is shown here as 54321. a quick check here indicates it is the same as 2003, Stigma & discrimination. lets not be silly people. that same page also appears to show there is some complications with the AIDs day theme, at least in 2005. unless i get beaten too it i will fix when i am more sober. - fruitybix 1/12/05

[edit] Red Ribbon

Why is the Red Ribbon a redirection to a Dragonballs article?

[edit] Condom on the Obelisk of Buenos Aires

Last year the government of Buenos Aires placed a giant "condom" on the Obelisco, for awareness, on AIDS Day. I've added the picture to Condom, since it's not simply a weird sight but an example of the cultural impact of the device; I'm not sure if it's appropriate here, so I'm asking for your opinions. —Pablo D. [edit] Origin of World AIDS Day

While World AIDS Day became a UN sponsored event in 1988, it was actually started in 1986 by Metropolitan Community Church's Rev. David Farrell as a colaborative initiative between MCC and other faith communities.

[edit] Reason for 1 December

I've removed the remark that this commemorates the "first diagnosis" in 1981. That statement had no reference, and I've been unable to find anything important on 1 Dec 1981. The syndrome was identified by at least 5 June, 1981 by CDC. Was it officially declared a new disease on 1 Dec, perhaps?
