Woodchuck Draft Cider
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Woodchuck Draft Cider is a brand of hard cider produced by the Green Mountain Cidery in Middlebury, Vermont. The company sells several types of cider under this brand name, including:
- Amber - a traditional New England cider
- Dark & Dry 802 - has caramelized sugar added, but still drier than Amber
- Pear - a perry
- Granny Smith - made from only Granny Smith apples
- Raspberry - apple cider with a raspberry flavoring added
They also formerly produced a variety called Colonial, which was aged in oak barrels, but it no longer seems to be available.
The Dark & Dry variety is now known as 'Dark & Dry 802', and the packaging has changed from brown to orange. The explanation why comes straight from Woody Woodchuck himself-
"Thank you for your interest in Woodchuck Draft Ciders. We have not changed the formula of Dark & Dry 802 only the packaging and name. With the old dark brown packaging and the name Dark & Dry everyone thought it was like a dark thick beer when in fact it is absolutely nothing like it. This meant a lot of people wouldn't even try it. As it is our local favorite we wanted to get more people out in the market to try it. The 802 comes from it being a local favorite and 802 is the Vermont area code. The same great taste is still there!"
The woodchuck species (also known as a groundhog) does not have a broad flat tail, as depicted on the label; however, beavers do, and beavers, unlike woodchucks, actually do "chuck wood".
