Wolfson Foundation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wolfson Foundation is a charitable foundation based in London, set up in 1955. Grants are made to registered charities in the UK (or organisations with charitable status.)

The Foundation supports projects across the fields of science and technology, medical research and health, education and the arts, currently allocating some £35 million per annum.

The foundation was established by and named after Sir Isaac Wolfson, Chairman of Great Universal Stores (GUS) and his son Lord Wolfson was a founder trustee.

The Foundation gave financial support to establish both Wolfson College, Oxford and Wolfson College, Cambridge in the 1960s as well as the Wolfson Research Institute, at Durham University's Queen's Campus in Stockton-on-Tees, which opened in 2001. In addition, Wolfson laboratories and units are present at a wide number of universities.

A brief history of the Foundation was published for its 50th anniversary: A Historical Perspective: 1955-2005, which is available as a pdf document.[1]
