WNYE started out as a high-frequency AM ("apex") station in 1938, switching to FM in 1942, at which time it broadcast at a frequency of 42.1 MHz. In 1946, it moved to a new FM band at 91.7 MHz. Then in 1948, it moved to 91.5 MHz. WNYE-FM is a radio station which airs domestic programs on weekdays and international programs on the weekend like a multicultural broadcasting station not to be confused with the company "Multicultural Broadcasting". Most notably, it airs the National Public Radio shows that WNYC, the primary NPR affiliate, does not air, such as Day To Day, Talk of the Nation, and The Diane Rehm Show. Although under the name of the NYC Media Group, WNYE is actually a publicly owned station by the New York City Department of Education. The NYCDOE also has a public television station using the same call letters, WNYE-TV (Channel 25). In addition to this station, there are several cable access channels and intranetwork public information program that runs respectively in all city agencies, ie. Department of Labor, Motor Vehicles, Sanitation, Social Services, etc.
