WMTR-FM

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WMTR-FM is a radio station that broadcasts at 96.1 MHz on the FM dial in Archbold, Ohio. WMTR-FM airs a hot adult contemporary format with some classic rock material mixed in. It is the primary local station for the Archbold/Fulton County area (including the cities of Delta and Wauseon), and its 3,000-watt signal can be heard clearly from Adrian, Michigan in the north to Defiance, Ohio in the south. The station is also listenable in the western suburbs of Toledo and is frequently rated in the Toledo Arbitron ratings reports.

WMTR-FM began broadcasting in 1968 and formerly bore the WHFD calls. The station is owned by Northwestern Ohio Broadcasting Corporation and prides itself on the fact that it is still locally owned and operated. Max Smith, Sr. founded the station, which is managed today by his son, Max Smith, Jr. In a note of historical significance, WMTR-FM was one of the first commercial radio stations in the nation to convert to DAT technology in the late 1980's, considered state-of-the-art for the time.

WMTR-AM 1250, an oldies station in Morristown, New Jersey owned by Greater Media, is in no way associated with WMTR-FM. Until the late 1980s, call letters could only be used within the same company; when a company owned an AM and FM station and sold the FM station, the FM station had to change calls. Also, when a company owned both radio and TV stations with the same calls and the TV station was sold, the TV station also would have to change calls. In New York City, for example, when WOR-TV was sold, the calls had to be changed and were to WWOR. WOR 710 retained the original calls. Since the late 1980s, AM and FM stations that are not co-owned and may in fact even be in different areas of the country, as with the WMTR situation, can now share calls. Still, the FM station must legally have FM as part of its calls if an AM or TV station shares such calls.
