WMCX is a New Jersey college radio station with a Modern Rock format. The studios and production facilities are located at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

WMCX began broadcasting on 88.1 MHz from Monmouth University on May 2, 1974. At 10 watts, the station could only be heard within a radius of 2-3 miles. On September of 1987, the station moved to 88.9 MHz and increased power to 1,000 watts. Today, the station has a broadcast radius of approximately 15 miles in various towns located in Monmouth and Ocean counties in New Jersey. The station has more than 500,000 listeners both domestically and internationally thanks largely to the "listen live" streaming radio feature on their official web site. This feature enables listeners to tune in to the station from anywhere in the world at anytime.

May 2, 1974: WMCX broadcasts for the first time as 88.1 FM, a 10 watt station.
March 29, 1984: A fire destroys the station.
March 6, 1985: WMCX gets back on track after the fire destroyed the operation of the station. The station is reopened with a new commitment and goals.
June 26, 1986: WMCX applies to the FCC for a new frequency and power.
September 17, 1987: The FCC approves WMCX to become a 1000 watt station, broadcasting at 88.9 MHz.
May 2, 1999: WMCX celebrates its 25th anniversary.
November 13, 1999: WMCX can now be heard worldwide on wmcx.com.
Fall 2002: WMCX is now located in the Plangere Center for Communication and Instructional Technology with all new state of the art equipment.
May 2, 2004: WMCX celebrates its 30th anniversary.

- WMCX-FM was the first media outlet to announce the death of Bob Marley.
- On April 21, 2006, the station made history when they presented a 12 hour music festival from 6 p.m. till 6 a.m. the following morning. The event featured live bands in studio for a performance and interviews. The event was well received and popular amongst station listeners.
- In 1993 students Damon Fibraio and Mike Ellis started No Holds Barred Radio, an adult-oriented comedy show that was suspended from the airwaves numerous times. They now broadcast exclusively on the internet, but made a live broadcast on WMCX for the 30th anniversary celebration in 2004.
- The Hostage Situation with special apperances by "John Madden, and "Ghost Face Killa" Began on their trek for world domination. They also Publically execute J.M.A.
- In 2007 Wolf Kitty of Goat Casket was killed by a poisonous snake bite during the first ever 24 hour music fest. The Casket Crew promptly performed a secret Norweigian mating ritual which included rubbing oneselves in poison ivy and eating the pinkies of their fallen leader.
