[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Lone Power, suspecting that a new threat is rising to its dark abilities, creates a surge of Pullulus (Dark Matter) to eclipse the universe. In addition, the Seniors lose their magical powers and young wizards are left with the task of delegating magic across the universe. Led by Ponch, Nita, Kit, Ronan, Dairine, and the wizardly tourists from book 7 (Filif the tree (more accurately, the Demisiv), Roshaun the humanoid, and Sker'ret the centipede (more accurately, the Rirhait), son of the Stationmaster of the Crossings, they cross the galaxy to try to find and activate the threat to the Lone Power, in addition to stopping the Pullulus from destroying the universe. When the solution, a good version of the Lone One, The Hesper (Memeki), is found and activated, a new hope is given to the worlds. But the Wizards must still destroy the Pullulus. Roshaun disappears attempting to destroy the dark matter with the Sunstone, and Ponch reveals himself to be the incarnation of the ruler of the Powers That Be, The One, then sacrificing himself to destroy the dark matter. However, at the end of the book, it is revealed that Ponch is now the dog avatar of the One and resides in every dog on Earth. It is also questionable whether Roshaun is lost forever, because Dairine, distraught at the loss of him, finds evidence that he is still alive somewhere.
