101 WIXX is a Top 40 radio station located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The station broadcasts at 101.1 MHz, on the FM dial. WIXX is owned and operated by Wausau, Wisconsin-based Midwest Communications, which owns six other radio stations in Northeast Wisconsin. The station's studios are located in the WBAY building in downtown Green Bay. WIXX's transmitter is located in the town of Ledgeview, on Scray's Hill, adjacent to the WBAY-TV transmitter.

Midwest Communications also voicetracks several WIXX personalities on both WTBX-FM in Hibbing, Minnesota and KRBR-FM in Duluth, Minnesota. Interestingly neither station is top forty like WIXX, as WTBX is on a Hot AC format and KRBR is mainstream rock.

[edit] History

The station, with the original call letters WBAY-FM, was the FM radio outlet for the Norbertine Fathers of De Pere along with WBAY-TV and WBAY-AM (now WTAQ-AM). When the order sold its broadcast holdings, the radio stations were sold to what would become Midwest Communications and the current call letters were adopted. The FM station, which had broadcast easy listening music in the 1960s before becoming an album-oriented rock station, was switched to automated Top 40 in 1977, but later switched back to live announcers.

WIXX is unique in the fact that it consistently has been rated number one or number two in Green Bay and Appleton throughout the 1990s and 2000s, according to Arbitron. WIXX is one of 118 radio stations monitored by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems as part of the R&R Top 40/CHR panel. Unlike most other Top 40 stations, WIXX concentrates more on current rock music.
