With Teeth (also known as Halo 19, also printed as [With_Teeth]) is an album by Nine Inch Nails released on May 3, 2005. With Teeth is the nineteenth official Nine Inch Nails halo release and the band's fifth major album. It is preceded by the 1999 double album The Fragile and is to be followed by Year Zero that is due out in 2007. With Teeth was released as a standard CD, double vinyl, a DualDisc and a CD/DVD combo. In addition to 5.1 surround and stereo mixes of the songs, the DualDisc (and DVD) contain the video for "The Hand that Feeds", an interactive discography and a slide show of album artwork.

[edit] Overview

In a Rolling Stone interview before the release of With Teeth, Reznor said that the album would be "more song-oriented [than The Fragile and] much more lean. It's going to be twelve good punches in the face — no fillers, no instrumentals, just straight to the point."[1] Reznor commented that With Teeth consists of "a collection of songs that are friends with each other, but don't have to rely on each other to make sense";[2] however, the album's narrative arc describes "a difficult journey that begins with a nightmare and ends with acceptance of a new reality."[3]

The working title for With Teeth was Bleedthrough, referencing the phenomenon of audio bleed-through. Reznor stated that the name was changed because "it was supposed to be about different layers of reality seeping into the next, but I think some people were thinking about blood or a tampon commercial."[4] The album was also previously thought to be called "The Mentality of One",[5] though this proved to be a hoax title.

The album was produced by Trent Reznor and longtime NIN producer Alan Moulder (who has also produced albums by The Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, and My Bloody Valentine) with engineering and assistance by Atticus Ross. Making a guest appearance on drums and live percussion, former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl appears on seven tracks from With Teeth. According to a statement on the official NIN website, Reznor stated that world-famous producer Rick Rubin was Reznor's "mentor" and "source of inspiration" throughout the planning and writing process of the album. Reznor was also heavily inspired by the use of more analog electronic effects and instruments, specifically tape delay and modular synthesizers.

In another statement to fans on the official website, Reznor explained that his dislike for the constraints of CD artwork led to the creation of a 20 megabyte 3'×4' poster (released as a free PDF file to those who register with the NIN website) incorporating credits, lyrics and imagery. The poster, designed by Trent Reznor and Rob Sheridan, contains lyrics that are not featured in the actual songs (a practice Reznor has continued since pretty hate machine), as well as song titles and lyrics not featured on the album, possibly recorded but unreleased.[6] Physically, the poster is available to members of the official NIN fan club as part of the initial welcome package. Some limited runs of the poster were also made by fans, and are available online.

[edit] Tour

The tour for the album began in Fresno, California on March 23, 2005 and featured former A Perfect Circle and Marilyn Manson bassist Jeordie White (previously known as Twiggy Ramirez), former Icarus Line guitarist Aaron North, keyboardist Alessandro Cortini, and returning drummer Jerome Dillon who was replaced in October 2005 by Alex Carapetis after experiencing heart trouble.[7] He was in turn replaced quickly with Josh Freese. A live DVD of the tour entitled Beside You In Time, filmed in high-definition video, was released in 2007.

[edit] Reception

All three singles from With Teeth have gone to #1 on the Modern Rock charts, a first for Nine Inch Nails. "The Hand that Feeds" began radio play on March 14. A leaked copy of the song was broadcast on radio in February, and a leaked copy of "The Line Begins to Blur" appeared on the Internet soon afterward. On February 27, 2005, "Getting Smaller" leaked onto the Internet, followed by "Right Where it Belongs," and the entire album was leaked on file-sharing networks 18 days before its official release.

The album's second single, "Only," was released on July 25. A video, directed by David Fincher, was shot for it on April 19, 2005 and released on July 12 via the official NIN website. "Every Day Is Exactly the Same," which, unlike the previous two, would not have an accompanying video. The song was nominated for a Grammy at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. With Teeth was also named one of the top 40 albums of 2005 by Spin magazine, and chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005.

The album holds a score 71 on MetaCritic, of the 22 reviews 16 are scores over 60, 9 are over 80 and 2 are 90 and up.
