[edit] Plot
There are two daughters in the Wheaton household Alexia (Katherine Heigl) and Haley (Danielle Harris) each as different as night and day. Alexia is the popular type with no brains, a great sense of style and the jock boyfriend. Haley on the other hand is quiet, shy and excels at math and science.
Haley and Alexia don't get along much at all with Alexia hating the fact that she has to drive Haley to school, thus being seen with her less than cool sister. Haley just wants a small portion of Alexia's popularity and one night wishes on a comet that she could become Alexia for one day.
The cosmic gods agree and when Haley and Alexia awaken they find themselves trapped in the other's body. This comes as a shock to Alexia who hates the switch and forbids her sister to go to school like this. Naturally Haley is happy as she gets to do all the things she's only dreamed of including dressing up, driving and dating her sisters popular jock boyfriend Kyle (Don Jeffcoat). Haley also learns the tough lesson of kissing with gum in your mouth. Haley is not used to chewing gum either, but she finds a nice spot on her index finger for her gum to rest. After the first day ends they realize they may in fact be stuck like this for a while and learn to look at their lives in a different ways. As they both become accustomed to each other's life they begin to relate to one another and become closer as sisters.
One night, while they are searching for the shooting star to make their wish to switch, they decide to spend one more day as each other. Haley's job (in Alexia's body) is to help convince her teachers that Alexia is not an "airhead" and Alexia's job (in Haley's body) is to help show Haley how easy it is to get a guy.
Haley's and Alexia's plan works, and they decide that it's time for them to switch back. However, they fall asleep early and Haley ( in Alexia's body)wakes up during the night and makes the wish. When she wakes up, she finds that they didn't switch back and she believes that they will never be able to. Alexia (in Haley's body) doesn't know that Haley made the wish.
At the end of the movie, Haley (in Alexia's body) breaks down and tells Alexia (in Haley's body) that they can't switch back. Alexia then tells Haley that she saw the star when she was with Kyle and she wished to be Haley. They both realize that they both need to make the wish at the exact same time to switch back. They go outside, see the star, make the wish, and they switch back.
Alexia and Haley then go to the Winter Festival where Alexia is crowned queen. She then dances on stage with her boyfriend, while Haley finds their new neighbor Simon and dances with him.
