Wipeout Pure is a 2005 video game. Wipeout Pure takes the Wipeout series over to Sony's new PlayStation Portable (PSP). The game was released simultaneously with the release of the PSP during its North American launch. The developers expressed a desire to return to the handling of Wipeout 2097 and to make various changes to the track design. Most notably, the pit lane for recharging shields is absent, with the player instead able to replenish energy by absorbing the currently-carried weapon. The return to the style of past games and streamlining of the gameplay make up the "pure" essence of Pure. The game takes place in the year 2197.

[edit] Description

Wipeout Pure was the first PSP title to support downloadable content including extra vehicles, tracks, and artwork free of charge via the Internet. Packs of downloadable content were made available every month for six months.

Pure also uses the WiFi ability of the PSP for multiplayer racing.

To compensate for the delay of the launch in Europe, both for the PSP and its games, Studio Liverpool added a few new features to the European version. Wipeout Pure now supports game sharing (via the Wipeout Pure option in the teasers menu) which means that someone with the Euro version of Wipeout Pure can send the demo version over WiFi to other PSP owners who do not have Pure. This gives the ability to have up to 8 player games with only one copy of the game (but only on the demo tracks). Another feature added was the playable demo for Fired Up and a MediEvil movie demo. The Fired Up demo also supports game sharing for multiplaying with up to 8 friends who don't have Pure or Fired Up, but only on the Junkyard level. Finally, the European release contains 4 exclusive tracks available via download. These are named the Omega Tracks. In addition to the American, European and Japanese versions, there are two more versions: a Korean version with downloadable content support but no available downloads yet, and an asian version ('zone 3') which includes no download feature and has no planned additional content.

These differences between the European and US versions of the game has unfortunately caused the two versions to be incompatible for the purposes of WiFi multiplayer.

Since the release of Wipeout Pure, a hidden web browser has been found in the game's Downloads section. By changing the DNS and access of the Sony PSP to a local machine, the PSP will look for http://ingame.scea.com/Wipeout/index.html on the local machine instead of online. By creating a webpage on a local machine with links, the PSP can thus surf the internet before the actual firmware update was released. Basic interactive functions include navigation of the page with the D-Pad, scrolling through previously viewed sites with the shoulder buttons, activating links with the X button and refreshing pages with the "square" button. http://omlette.net/psp/roto/ has a full detailed explanation of how to get Wipeout Pure to browse the internet. This trick has since been rendered moot by the addition of a fully functional web browser to the PSP operating system for version 2.0 and higher. Further online playability has been worked out for Wipeout Pure. Players with specific models of wireless hardware and the Xlink Kai software can link up via the internet and race with other players regardless of their location across the globe, as if they were making a direct WiFi connection.

[edit] Sequel

After a year of murmurs a sequel to the PSP launch game Wipeout Pure from 2005 has been officially revealed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Called Wipeout Pulse, the racing game is set for release on PSP later in 2007.

Features and awesome improvements include:

  • Wipeout Pulse will feature 24 new tracks.
  • Licensed music from Mason, Loco Dice and Stanton Warriors.
  • Multiplayer via Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure.
  • Eight new teams, including “EG-X”.
  • New “Mag-strip” feature allows ships to magnetically stick to tracks. This will allow certain tracks to feature loops, 90 degree plummets, and various other previously unseen obstacles.
  • Custom soundtracks allow playback of MP3s stored on Memory Stick.
  • Photo Mode captures in-game screenshots.
  • Like Wipeout Pure, the game will feature downloadable content, such as new tracks and songs, immediately after release.
