Winterville is a town in Pitt County . Money Magazine has ranked the town 23rd among 50 of the nation's most attractive suburbs. The population was 4,791 at the 2000 census. In March of 2006, it was estimated that the town’s population was 8,942. The town is a part of the Greenville Metropolitan Area.

Winterville is located at 35°31′48″N, 77°24′0″W (35.529934, -77.400021)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.3 km² (2.5 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,791 people, 1,848 households, and 1,371 families residing in the town. The population density was 755.0/km² (1,954.1/mi²). There were 1,937 housing units at an average density of 305.3/km² (790.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 59.24% White, 38.36% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.

There were 1,848 households out of which 38.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 84.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,230, and the median income for a family was $47,167. Males had a median income of $36,004 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,810. About 10.3% of families and 11.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.4% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.
