Winter Derby

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Winter Derby is a Group 3 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for four-year-old and above thoroughbreds run over a distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs (2,013 metres) at Lingfield Park in mid March.

It was first run in 1998 and attained Group 3 status in 2006, thus becoming the earliest Pattern race in the British flat racing calendar.

It is one of three British Pattern races which are now regularly contested on an all-weather surface, along with the September Stakes and the Sirenia Stakes at Kempton Park. However, the first all-weather Pattern race to take place in Britain was the Silver Trophy Stakes when it was transferred to Lingfield from Ascot in July 2005.
