[edit] High School Activities
[edit] Sports
Winnebago High School is possibly best known for its storied Cross Country program. The Boys team has won three IHSA State titles, in 1978, 2002, and 2005. A key member of the latter two championships was Jeremy Stevens, who took the individual State title in 2003 and 2005 and placed second in 2004. The Girls team has been even more successful, winning the team State championship nine times, a state record.
In recent years, the school became recognized for excellence in Boys Basketball as well. Led by West Virginia recruit and 3-time All-Stater Devan Bawinkel, the team placed second in the state in 2004 and 2005.
In 2005-06, Winnebago earned its first trip to state in Boys Soccer, losing in the quarterfinals to West Chicago (Wheaton Academy). The loss ended a school record 19 game unbeaten streak that featured the team outscoring its opponents 85-10 and earned the school the Big Northern Conference championship. It earned another trip to the quarterfinals the following year, again losing in the quarterfinals.
[edit] Academics
Winnebago is also known for its storied history in academic competitions. The Winnebago High School Scholastic Bowl team, led by Hall of Fame coach Karen Niemeier, has won two IHSA State Championships (1993, 1995), one Masonic State title (1994), one National title (1994, The Griffin Experience Scholastic Showdown in St. Louis, now defunct), along with placing third in the IHSA State Finals twice (1994, 2006) and second in the Masonic State Finals once (1993). Winnebago is the only team in IHSA history to defeat The Latin School of Chicago in a State Championship game, having done it to win both the 1993 and 1995 state titles.
The 2005-2006 team, with a record of 71-20, was noted for being the only Class A team to defeat the 2005-06 IHSA Class AA and Masonic State Champion Palatine (Fremd) (62-4 record) and the only Class A team and one of only four teams to defeat IHSA Class AA third place finisher Rockford (Auburn) (86-5 record).

During the 1993-94 school year, a van accidentally went through a wall of the town library. No one was hurt.
