WinRE is a set of tools included on the Windows Vista operating system to help to diagnose and recover from serious errors. To access WinRE(Windows REcovery) tap F8 while the computer is booting up.

The number of tools available has increased significantly compared to what is available with previous versions of Windows. Windows XP is limited to a command prompt in its troubleshooting tool, the Windows Recovery Console.

There are now five recovery options available when booting from the Operating System DVD:

  • Startup Repair - A new automated tool that finds and fixes boot errors (including corrupted Boot Configuration Data Files)
  • System Restore - Utilizes the Volume Shadow Copy Service to create restore points
  • CompletePC Restore - A new tool in Vista. Creates an image of your drive (System files AND user files)
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool - Previously available as a standalone download; this tool can be started from within Vista or from System Recovery
  • Command Prompt - Useful for access to the file system and disks
