Winchester Thurston School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. The school was created by a merger in 1935 of the Winchester School (established in 1887) and Thurston School (established in 1902). Originally an all-girls school, it became co-educational in 1991.
It has two campuses: a pre-kindergarten through grade 12 City Campus in Shadyside, and since 1988 a suburban, pre-kindergarten through grade five North Hills Campus in Hampton Township, Pennsylvania.[citation needed] The city campus expanded in 2006 with a new upper school building across from the lower school building.[citation needed]
The school offers classes such as Foundations of Language, Asian Studies, Ethics in American Society, Leadership, Robotics, Pop Culture Dance, and MTV Dance at the Middle School; club offerings include Literary Club, Political Discussion Club, Sports Club, Fantasy Sports Club, Art Club, DEAR, Stock Market Club, and more. In the Upper School, clubs include How Things Work, Amnesty International, People of Color, and Becca's Closet, and more.[citations needed] It offers training in drama, dance, and voice beginning in grade six.[citation needed]
Winchester Thurston offers sports such as cross country running, lacrosse, tennis, field hockey, swimming, fencing, basketball, soccer, and golfing.[citation needed] Its mascot is a bear.[citation needed]
