WinSoftware

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WinSoftware Ltd is a company that develops highly questionable security software (labeled as malware, adware or spyware by several leading security companies) such as firewalls, anti-virus programs and registry cleaners. The most known products that the company has developed is WinFixer, WinAntiVirus and WinAntiSpyware. The products have been widely criticized because they give fraudulent or exaggerated reports of threats on computers, forcibly install the software through web browser security holes, regardless of the user's consent, and for the pop-up windows that may appear on some web sites which may redirect the user to a WinSoftware site, regardless of the user clicking "OK" or "Cancel". The company's "marketing strategy" is of a bait and switch orientation, involving false advertisement and appeal to fear, and is considered illegal in most countries. The company's slogan is "Professional security for home computing".

Winsoftware Ltd., claims to be based in Liverpool, England (Stanley Street, postcode: 13088.) However this has been proven false [1]. For starters, 13088 is not a valid UK postcode format — Stanley Street is in the city center of Liverpool (linking to Mathew Street, home of The Cavern) so it should carry an L1 prefix. Also, the street itself is in a quarter of the city center dominated by shops, galleries, boutiques, restaurants and pubs — There are offices for solicitors, employment bureaus and accountants but not small businesses or software houses. However, 13088 is the postcode for Liverpool, New York; see here. The city in question does not have a street called "Stanley Street".

The company name, WinSoftware, may be derived from the Microsoft Windows abbreviation "Win" joined with the word software.
