WINK-TV is the CBS television affiliate serving Southwest Florida. Licensed to Ft. Myers, the station broadcasts its analog signal on VHF channel 11 and its digital signal on VHF channel 9. WINK-TV's transmitter is located north of Ft. Myers Shores near the Lee and Charlotte County line. WFTX, WBBH, and WXCW also have their transmitters located at this site.

It can also be seen in the market on cable channel 5. The station covers Lee, Collier, Sarasota, Hendry, and Glades Counties, and is one of two Ft. Myers stations carried by Comcast cable systems in Venice. The station is owned by the McBride family's Ft. Myers Broadcasting Company. WINK-TV's studios are located in Ft. Myers on Palm Beach Boulevard.

WTSP, Tampa Bay's CBS affiliate, has a signal that cannot be seen well in Sarasota County County which is part of the Tampa Bay DMA. This is because its transmitter is located in Holiday, Florida which is northwest of Tampa. Viewers without cable must rely on WINK for CBS programming, as its signal reaches most of Sarasota County.

[edit] History

WINK-TV was founded on March 18, 1954 and has been owned by the McBride Family ever since the station first broadcasted. It was the first television station in Southwest Florida and the fifth-oldest station in the state Florida. At the time of the station's beginning, Southwest Florida was underpopulated and people had to rely on television stations from Miami and Tampa Bay. These markets were and continued to be obtainable with large outdoor antennas.

These are the results from the November 2006 sweeps period.

WINK-TV 3.9 8.4 7.7

[1]

Here are some important facts about the sweeps perios from The News-Press Media Matters Column:

  • For the first time in years, WBBH passed WINK-TV in the Noon news race.
  • At 5 PM, WINK-TV won but numbers were down 20% from November of 2005.
  • At 6 PM, WINK-TV plummeted from a 21% audience share to just 15%.

[2]

There are some key differences this year at WINK-TV, with a big female anchor shuffle occurring right before the November sweeps. Lead 5, 6, and 11 PM anchor Lois Thome was on maternity leave during the sweeps period. Also, Diane Fresta, formerly of "WINK News at 5:30 PM" and Eye on Health reporter departed in September. Stacey Adams from "WINK News This Morning" assumed Lee's position as well as filling in for Thome. Sarah Augusthy joined the station replacing Stacey in the AM and at Noon.

Gary Gardner, WINK-TV's General Manager, told The News-Pressthat "he attributes some of WINK's ratings woes to high staff turnover in recent months and the dismal debut of new CBS network anchor, Katie Couric." [3]

[edit] Network Programming

As WINK clears the entire CBS schedule, it preempts the first hour of The Early Show for its own "Hello Southwest Florida" news program. Due to an hour-long newscast at Noon, WINK airs two of CBS's soap operas out of pattern: The Bold and the Beautiful airs at 10:30 AM (normally airs at 1:30 PM) and The Young and the Restless airs at 1 PM, which is half an hour later than most CBS affiliates.

[edit] Newscasts

The station's radar is called "SKY Tracker Doppler" and is located next to the WINK-TV studios.

Starting on March 26, 2007, WINK-TV began to produce a daily 10 PM newscast on the area's CW affiliate WXCW. During the week, the newscast features anchors Trey Radel and Stacey Adams with meteorologist Scott Zedeker. [5] This is now the third 10 PM newscast in the market after WFTX and WNFM, and has become a #2 newscast within days of it's debut.
