Wilmot, Wisconsin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilmot is a small, unincorporated residential and business community in Salem, Kenosha County, Wisconsin in southwestern Kenosha County, Wisconsin.

The Wilmot Union High School, Kenosha County Fairgrounds and the Wilmot Speedway are located in Wilmot, as is the Wilmot Stage Stop Inn, which has been in continuous operation since the 1848 incorporation of Wisconsin statehood. In addition to being a fine restaurant, the Stage Stop offers a museum on its second floor which can be seen even if not eating at the establishment.

[edit] Odds 'N' Ends

Wilmot could easily have been the main 'village' of the township if the railroad had reached its location. Instead, it developed into a rather substantial business community because of its location on the Fox River. It is the Fox River that was harnessed to support the flour mill and when that burned, the river was again harnessed to generate electrical power. Wilmot supported all of the other areas of the township with electricity. In addition, they were one of the first, if not the first, to have telephones in the township. Lines from the operator's panel to the other hamlets in the township continued to lengthen in distance from the first pole setting each year until the entire township was 'wired'. Many of the earliest buildings still exist throughout the village.

[edit] Skiing

Wilmot is home to Wilmot Mountain, the most popular ski area for the area, plus most of Chicagoland! It’s only one hour away from Chicago, making it the closest ski resort to the city. The hill is popular with skiers of all experience levels. It has several easy Green runs, some more challenging Blue runs, and several Black runs.

The hill offers ongoing race training, racing events, kids programs, lessons for all levels of experience. It’s the largest tourist attraction during the winter months. In 2005 the state of Wisconsin announced a $40,000 grant to promote winter end early spring travel for the area.
