William le Scrope, 1st Earl of Wiltshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William le Scrope, 1st Earl of Wiltshire (1350-1399) was a close supporter of King Richard II of England. He was made Earl of Wiltshire in Richard's 1397 effusion of titles. He was executed by Henry IV on his invasion and usurpation. An attempt was made to reclaim the Earldom by his collateral descendant Simon Thomas Scrope, of Danby, over 500 years later, but, although he was proven to be the senior heir male general, the claim failed on other grounds (Wiltes Claim of Peerage (1869) 4 HL 126).
