William Southgate

William Southgate, KB is a New Zealand conductor and composer. He was the first New Zealand-based artist to be knighted.

[edit] Biography

Southgate graduated from Otago University with first class honours in both M.A. and B.Mus. He studied advanced conducting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London) thanks to post-graduate scholarships. He graduated with the Ricordi Conductors' Prize.

He has had long associations, including terms as principal conductor, with both the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
