William Penn School District

The William Penn School District is a regional public school district located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It comprises eight elementary schools, one middle school, a 9th grade "academy" school, and one high school. The District serves the boroughs of Aldan, Colwyn, Darby, East Lansdowne, Lansdowne, and Yeadon. The district is adjacent to the City of Philadelphia. The total enrollment is about 5610.

The district was created in 1972 from the consolidation of smaller, local districts by state mandate that they merge and desegregate their schools. One in five district students is classified as being in special education [1].

Students living in Philadelphia are not legally served by William Penn School District. A number of parents living in the City register their children with falsified addresses or the addresses of relatives who live in the district. Like fellow County-City border district Upper Darby, financially supporting these "illegal students" has become a contentious issue with some taxpayers.[2]
