William McKenzie was a notable Scottish ophthalmologist who obtained his MD under Georg Joseph Beer at the University of Vienna. He is also notable for being the mentor of Thomas Wharton Jones, leading to a significant scientific genealogy including physicists such as Paul Dirac and Stephen Hawking.
In 1819, he took up the anatomy chair at Anderson's College Medical School. During 1831-1868 he took up the Waltonian Medical Lectureship at the University of Glasgow.
