William John Kowalski III is an American novelist and screenwriter. He was born August 3, 1970 in Parma, Ohio, the eldest child of Dr. William John Kowalski, Jr. of Buffalo, N.Y. (1942- ) and Kathleen Emily Siepel of Angola, N.Y. (1942- ). In 1974, the family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania. Kowalski matriculated at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1990. He graduated in 1994 and entered the teaching profession, leaving it in 1998 after the sale of his first novel.

William Kowalski is the author of four novels: Eddie’s Bastard (1999); Somewhere South of Here (2001); The Adventures of Flash Jackson (2003); and The Good Neighbor (2004), all published in the U.S. by HarperCollins and in the U.K. by Transworld/Doubleday/Black Swan. Eddie’s Bastard is the winner of South Africa’s Book Lover’s Award (2001); The Adventures of Flash Jackson was a Literary Guild Alternate Selection in 2003. Kowalski’s work has been translated into fourteen languages and has appeared on numerous bestseller lists, including the Times of London.

As a screenwriter, Kowalski sometimes works with director Markus Griesshammer. Together they wrote Coyote Beach (2003), a short film which was featured in numerous international film festivals and won the 21st Century Filmmaker’s Award at the 9th Annual New York/Avignon Film Festival in 2003.

William Kowalski is married to Alexandra Nedergaard (1968- ) of Toronto, Ontario. They have two children.
