William Jewell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Jewell (1789-1852) was an educator from Columbia, Missouri who donated $10,000 to start William Jewell College in 1849 in Liberty, Missouri which was the first four-year men's college west of the Mississippi River.

Jewell, who was also once mayor of Columbia, initially wanted the Baptist school to be in Boonville, Missouri. However after Alexander William Doniphan argued that the offer of a larger parcel of undeveloped land in Clay County, Missouri was worth more than the developed land in Boonville, the Liberty site was chose.

The school's main building is named Jewell Hall.
