William H. Briare

William H. Briare (1930 Long Beach, California-December 8, 2006 Las Vegas, Nevada) was the mayor of Las Vegas from 1975-1987.[1] Briare was a Democrat.[2]

Briare served on the Nevada Legislature and as a Clark County Commissioner.
He defeated Harry Reid when he made a second attempt for the mayor's office having lost to Oran Gragson in his first attempt.
Briare was so positive about the city that people believed he ran the Chamber of Commerce not knowing he was the mayor.
'His public tenure came during a key time when control of casinos shifted from organized crime figures to corporations.'[3]
He was unsuccessful running for Lieutenant Governor in 1994.
Briare is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery.
