William Carey University

William Carey University is a university in southern Mississippi, in the United States. The main campus is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; there are two subsidiary campuses in Gulfport, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana. It was founded 1906 as the Mississippi Woman's College, but changed its name to William Carey College in 1954 when the college became coeducational.

The university is named for the Englishman widely considered to be the founder of modern protestant evangelical missions, William Carey D.D. (1761-1834.) He is widely considered equal to St. Xavier in his influence on modern missions.

William Carey University celebrated its Centennial on August 14, 2006. This day also marked the transition of William Carey College to William Carey University.

The college offers baccalaureate degrees in the areas of arts, humanities, and sciences; education and psychology; business; religion; music; and nursing. The M.B.A, M.Ed., M.S. in psychology, and M.S.N. degrees and a specialist degree in elementary education are also offered. Three trimesters of eleven weeks each comprise the academic year. Two summer sessions are also offered.

William Carey University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor and Masters degrees. The Winters School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The music therapy program is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association.

The Fail School of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, by the board of trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning of the State of Mississippi, and approved in New Orleans by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.

Notable members of the college of William Carey University include Milton Wheeler, PhD., Bennie Crockett, PhD, ThD, and Dr. Myron Noonkester, PhD.

The president of William Carey University, Dr. Larry Kennedy, recently succumbed after a long struggle against Lou Gehrig's Disease. Executive Vice President Tommy King is for the time being acting as interim president.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs is Dr. Cloyd Ezell. The Vice President of Church Relation in addition to serving as Dean of the Cooper School of Biblical Studies. Dr. Bennie Crockett is Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness in addition to serving as Co-Director for the Center for Study of the Life and Work of William Carey. Dr. Tommy King is the Executive Vice President of Graduate Programs in addition to serving as Dean of the School of Psychology. Joe Riley is the Vice President for Business Affairs. Brenda Waldrip is the Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management.

In addition, Dr. Patricia Ward is the Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Cheryl Dale is the Dean of the School of Business, Dr. Mary W. Stewart is the Dean of the Fail School of Nursing, Dr. Myron Noonkester is the Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences as well as Co-Director for the Center for Study of the Life and Work of William Carey, and Dr. Gene Winters is the Interim Dean of the Winters School of Music.
