William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland

William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland KG (Titchfield, March 1, 1709 – May 1, 1762) was the son of Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland and his wife Elizabeth Noel, daughter of Wriothesley Baptist Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough.
Portland was an original governor of the Foundling Hospital in London, founded in 1739.
On July 11, 1734, in Oxford Chapel, Marylebone, he married Margaret Cavendish-Harley (Welbeck Abbey, February 11, 1715 – July 17, 1785, Bulstrode Park, Buckinghamshire), daughter of Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford and Mortimer. She became Dowager Duchess of Portland upon his death.
They had six children:
- Elizabeth Cavendish-Bentinck (Welbeck Abbey, June 27, 1735 – December 25, 1825, London)
- Henrietta Cavendish-Bentinck (b. Welbeck Abbey, c. 1736)
- William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland (1738–1809)
- Margaret Cavendish-Bentinck (Welbeck Abbey, c. 1740 – April 28, 1756)
- Frances Cavendish-Bentinck (Welbeck Abbey, c. 1742 – March 1743)
- Edward Charles Cavendish-Bentinck (Welbeck Abbey, March 3, 1744 – October 8, 1819)
He was buried at Westminster Abbey on May 8, 1762.
