William Antrobus Griesbach

William Antrobus Griesbach CMG DSO (January 3, 1878 - January 21, 1945) was a Canadian politician and was an alderman of Edmonton, Alberta from 1905 to 1906 and Mayor of Edmonton in 1907.
Griesbach was born in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan as the son of a Northwest Mounted Police officer. He came to Edmonton in 1885 to work at a law firm and briefly went to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta to work in a milling business but returned to Edmonton to study law. He quickly enlisted with the Canadian Mounted Rifles in 1900 to fight in the Second Boer War. He returned and entered polticis by being elected city alderman in 1905. Later, he became the youngest Mayor of Edmonton. When World War I broke out, he joined the 19th Alberta Dragoons and was awarded the DSO and CMG. After the war, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1917 and was appointed to the Canadian Senate in 1921. The Griesbach Garrison (part of CFB Edmonton) was named in his honor.
