From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[edit] Governance
WLUSU is governed by a Board of Directors made up of the President (elected), Vice President: University Affairs (elected) and 15 Directors (elected at large). Five non-voting Vice Presidents (hired) sit on the Board of Directors as ex-officio, non-voting members, as does one member of WLUSU First Year Council. The Management Committee is composed of the President, Vice Presidents and the Chair and Vice Chair of the Board; these are the officers of WLUSU.
Directors are faced with the challenge of representing student concerns, while making effective corporate decisions.
[edit] Departments
WLUSU departments are each managed by a member of the Management Committee:
- University Affairs - Responsible for promoting a positive University atmosphere on campus and to lobby for higher quality education at Laurier and through the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance. Also responsible for environmental and equality issues.
- Finance - Responsible for Budget-related issues and for the management of Campus Clubs.
- Human Resources - Responsible for hiring, training, and development.
- Marketing - Responsible for the production of web, video (Video Productions), and print materials (Graphic Design), business promotion (BP Allstars), public relations (PR), and Radio Laurier.
- Student Activities - Responsible for events programming such as various fund-raising dinners, special events, and Orientation Week.
- Student Services - Responsible for services such as the campus walk-home program (Foot Patrol), student support and information phone line (Peer Help Line), A group that promotes responsible drinking and safe sexual practices (BACCHUS), a campus first aid team (ERT -Emergency Response Team), Legal Resources (LR) that helps student with legal issues, Tutorial Services who help WLU students improve their study skills, and Laurier Students For Literacy (LSFL) a group that improves children's reading and comprehension skills.
- Campus Clubs - The Campus Clubs Department oversees the over 95+ clubs on Campus.
These departments are run largely by volunteers (over 1,300 students volunteered with WLUSU in 2003). The six Vice Presidents, the President and staff members are paid.
[edit] Brantford Campus
Brantford students are members of WLUSU. In addition to electing members of the Board of Directors, Brantford students also elect a Campus Council made up of the Campus Commissioner and four Councilors. The Brantford WLUSU is largely disconnected from the Waterloo WLUSU, although the two bodies communicate regularly.
The Brantford WLUSU operates its own Orientation Week and Foot Patrol program, but many of the services offered in Waterloo are unavailable in Brantford. A new Student Centre will be erected on the site of the former Stillman House property, adjacent to the Post House Residence with completion set for October 2005.
[edit] Business Operations
WLUSU operates six fast food operations (Harvey's, Mr. Sub, Pizza Pizza, Pita Shack, Union Market, Yogen Fruz), a bar (Wilf's Restaurant and Pub), a nightclub (The Turret), a convenience store (The Centre Spot) and the newest addition for students, The Info Desk. Profit made by these operations is invested in WLUSU and helps to fund student services and the organization's seemingly incessant renovations. Over 300 students are employed annually by these businesses.
[edit] Staff
WLUSU employs 18 full-time staff members, mostly in the areas of Finance and Business Operations.
[edit] WLUSU Fees
In addition to WLUSU membership dues, students pay to partake in a Health Plan administered by WLUSU. In February 2005, students voted for WLUSU to negotiate group dental plan and bus pass rates.
[edit] External Representation
The Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union is a founding member of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance. Federally they are unaffiliated; they helped to found the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, though they never joined.
