Wilfred Paling

Wilfred Paling (7 April 1883 - 17 April 1971) was a British Labour politician, who was born at Maarehay, near Ripley, Derbyshire. He was educated at Ripley Elementary School and worked in the mines as a boy. He later studied mining at University College and worked as a colliery checkweighman at the Bulcroft Colliery.
He was a member of Yorkshire West Riding County Council from 1919-1923 and was elected as Member of Parliament for the Yorkshire constituencies of Doncaster from 1922-1931, Wentworth from 1933-1950, and Dearne Valley from 1950-1959. He had the largest majority of any MP in the 1945 general election - 35,410.
Paling was a Junior Lord of the Treasury from 1929-1931, Labour's deputy Chief Whip 1935-41, a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury from 1940-1941, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Pensions from 1941-1945, Minister of Pensions from 1945-1947 and Postmaster-General from 1947-1950.
He was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1944.
