Wilderness (RuneScape)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The wilderness is a player versus player (PvP) area in the MMORPG RuneScape, made barren from the destruction caused by wars between the gods. At one point, it was the only place for players to fight each other, and it is still the most dangerous method of player versus player combat. Most of the wilderness is available to all players; a small area in the far north is restricted to only members. The wilderness is bordered on the south by the kingdoms of Asgarnia and Misthalin, on the west by a nearly impassable mountain range inhabited by trolls, and on the east and north by a large sea.

[edit] Special Wilderness Rules
The wilderness consists of 57 levels. As a player moves farther north, the level of the area gradually increases. Players can attack other players whose combat level is within a certain range of their own. For example, a level 92 player in level 10 wilderness can attack players from level 82 to level 102. Therefore, a higher wilderness level means a greater chance of being attacked, but also means a greater chance of being able to attack another player.
When players attacks other players in the wilderness, the player initiating combat becomes "skulled", shown by a skull over the head of the attacking player. If a skulled player dies, the player will lose everything instead of keeping three items. If a skulled player does not attack another player for 20 minutes, the skull disappears, and the players will retain his/her three best items as usual when dying. Players can use the prayer "Protect Item" to keep an additional item.

[edit] Pures
The system that determines combat level in RuneScape combines a player's levels in the combat skills—hitpoints, attack, strength, defense, ranged, magic, and prayer—using a formula meant to accurately represent a player's power. Pures, however, use this to their advantage by training levels in a way that causes their combat level to misrepresent their actual skill levels. The concept of a pure is to keep the character’s combat level relatively low while raising their level in certain skills to high levels, allowing the pure to inflict more damage than a non-pure of the same level. For example, a pure ranger might have a combat level of 44, with ranged of 70, prayer of 1, and defense of 1, sacrificing prayer and defense to keep their combat level low.
[edit] Teams and clans
Many players travel the Wilderness alone; however, some prefer to travel with a team that may include one or more of each type of combat pure along with regular players. In some cases, teams include players at different combat levels. In this manner, the team can effectively player-kill virtually any other lone player they encounter.
Many team members on member servers purchase and wear team capes, which cause other players wearing the same cape to show up as blue dots rather than the normal white or green dots on the minimap. More importantly, team capes cause the default option on players without the same cape to be attack, while the default option on players with the same cape is never attack. This makes it much less likely for team members to accidentally attack members of their own team in the middle of battle. However, this does not prevent players from overriding the default and attacking their own teammates if they choose to do so.
Carrying the concept of teams to the next level, some players who travel the wilderness join large RuneScape clans, which consist of armies of players who enter the wilderness together on joint missions. Clans are usually well organized, and the combat levels of the players involved can vary greatly, though many clans have regulations for minimum levels.
[edit] Non-Player Characters
The wilderness, like the rest of RuneScape, contains a population of non-player characters, or NPCs. Monsters deeper in the wilderness tend to be stronger. In addition to the monsters, there are a few shopkeepers, travelling merchants, and a banker.
A wizard named Kolodion can be found close to the end of the Wilderness. He challenges players to defeat him, giving a reward of special items which enhance magical abilities. Closer to the edge of the Wilderness is a cave containing the King Black Dragon, the strongest dragon in RuneScape. The Chaos Elemental, another extremely powerful monster that uses magic to disarm and randomly teleport a player, inhabits the far northeast edge of the wilderness.
