[edit] License tagging for Image:Lt General Michael Maples.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Lt General Michael Maples.JPG. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 02:06, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Biographies

Generally, the name is sufficient. Mr. or Ms. should not be used. Exceptions are usually only made for this in the case of individuals holding degrees qualifying them to be referred to as "Doctor", and even then the practice is haphazard.

Hope that helped. cjs 22:57, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Got it. Thanks!! WilsonjrWikipedia 21:18, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help with templates

Hi. I don't know the technical workings of templates, only how to use them. But ask me anything and I'll see if I can help. You can also use {{helpme}} to ask questions. Xiner (talk, email) 00:05, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Type the Wiki code in the preferences and check the Raw sig box. I wouldn't put my email address on a website though. You can press edit here to see my code. Xiner (talk, email) 00:24, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Would you like me to adopt you? Xiner (talk, email) 00:26, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Done. You can add {{Adoptee|Xiner}} to your user page if you want. Xiner (talk, email) 00:44, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
That would be great! WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 00:44, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Did it. WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 00:46, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Introduction

Hi WilsonjrWikipedia. I hope I'll be able to impart some wisdom in the next few weeks. What Wikipedia topics are you most interested in, and what would you like to learn more about? And remember, you may end this adoption at any time. So, fire away your questions. Xiner (talk, email) 12:42, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Oh I see. Well then you shouldn't have any trouble learning about templates. You probably read this already, but if you haven't, take a look at Wikipedia:Template_messages. At the top of the page are some very useful links for help with template creation, and there's a list on the page of many different types of templates. Xiner (talk, email) 02:32, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Ok, read it. I found the Help:Template the most explanatory. What's next? WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 03:18, 12 January 2007 (UTC) Also, it makes sense to me for templates to have the word "user" be a link to a category of those who have that particular template on their page. I tried to convert a template to do so (see Template:Christian User) but it didn't work. What gives??? WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 03:54, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Use the : in front of Category only when you want to create a wikilink. If you want transclusion, leave out the colon. As for the template, there is already one in user space; please read Wikipedia:Userbox_migration#Quick_summary and the category also exists (Category:Wikipedians). Xiner (talk, email) 04:00, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Since you seem technically inclined, Wikipedia:Requested templates is a good place to meet new people and do some good deeds. Be selective, though. Xiner (talk, email) 19:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I read the Wikipedia:Userbox_migration#Quick_summary, but I don't understand what the problem is for having that type of template on peoples pages in that format. Second, the templates, in my opinion, benefit wikipedia by providing a categorization of person that have identified themselves as female, Christian, or whatever. This would provide a way of knowing how many and the users who have identfied themselves as a certain template. WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 23:30, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Well, personally I'd rather have all userboxes except for stuff in Wikipedia space (e.g., Babel, administrators) in user space. I'm not here to argue about it, though, but to simply let you know that the community seems to have arrived at the consensus that almost everything should be moved. Anything that remains will probably be WP:GUSsed eventually. Xiner (talk, email) 23:38, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Gotcha---that may actually make sense now that I think about it, for wikipedia. In Intellipedia, you want to identify who the Iraq analysts, Somalia analysts, or a particular's issue's working group members are. This helps build communities of interest virtually. I'll keep studying.
Yep, I see what you mean. Xiner (talk, email) 23:52, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

New question for you :) - I would like to create a statistic table or chart that would continuously tell me the most popular page in the last hour and in the last day, how would I do so? A template? And what would be the best way to measure the "most popular" page? By page edits, page views, a combination of the two? Bottom line is I would like a statistical measure for what people are "swarming". Is this possible? WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 03:54, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Oooh, that's really beyond my expertise. I'm sure you'll find someone at #wikimedia-tech on irc.freenode who can answer your question, though. I know that Wikipedia doesn't track page views due to resource issues, but for your own wikis, I'd think some under-the-hood scripting would work best. Xiner (talk, email) 04:05, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. I'll try that. - WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 17:25, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User warnings

This page will help you deal with various types of disruptive editing on Wikipedia. Now image I vandalized Arsenal F.C.. Warn me on my page using the appropriate level of warning and use the template to mention what page I messed with. Please let others know I didn't actually do anything. :) Xiner (talk, email) 02:12, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Actually, please post the warning at the sandbox (WP:SAND) and give me the diff (WP:DIFF). Xiner (talk, email) 14:13, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. Ok, I pasted the level 1 template for vandalism here. How do I capture the link to the difference? Is this what you meant? - WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 22:25, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
Good try. {{subst:uw-vandalism1|Arsenal F.C.}} would garner full credit. And yes, the full URL address is what is needed to capture a diff. Xiner (talk, email) 22:37, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Another assignment

When a user forgets to sign their message on a talk page, you can place something like {{unsigned|Xiner}} after their post. You can add a second argument for the time of the post, but I'm not good at UTC and don't bother with it.

Required reading: WP:3RR. Please let me know when you are finished reading. Xiner (talk, email) 03:03, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Done reading and I used the unsigned template on Iped. - WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 12:48, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, Iped? Xiner (talk, email) 14:43, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I mean Intellipedia. - WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 22:07, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Ah, cool. :) Xiner (talk, email) 20:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi. It's time for another assignment. Please check User:Xiner/Adoptee assignments. Thanks. Xiner (talk, email) 01:52, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Amber Alert for Mychael Darthard March 10, 2007

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Amber Alert for Mychael Darthard March 10, 2007, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.

This is the sort of thing that belongs on Wikinews rather than in Wikipedia, and the baby has fortunately been found so there is no need to maintain the alert in the encyclopedia in any event. Metropolitan90 05:46, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] My concern about your username (WilsonjrWikipedia)

Hello, WilsonjrWikipedia, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

It appears that your username violates WP:U#Inappropriate Usernames, as it contains the word Wikipedia, which is generally discouraged.

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

  • If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
  • If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as asking for a "third opinion", or requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Admins usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
  • If you decide to just go ahead and change your username, it is possible for you to keep your present contributions history under the new username: simply request a new name here following the guidelines on that page, rather than creating a whole new account.

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus — either here or at WP:RFC/NAME. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you again! -- Orthologist 16:19, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't think this is a problem. This user doesn't assert any relations with the Foundation, and "Rule added 19 February 2007. Such usernames created before this date may be allowed if they do not imply an official role or authority, or violate any of the other existing username rules." Xiner (talk, email) 01:33, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
If it needs to be changed, I'm all for it. If it doesn't, then even better! Thanks for the comments. - WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 23:49, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, I fully understand Orthologist's concerns, but also think you're in the clear here. Xiner (talk, email) 19:45, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Adoption

Hi there. I know I haven't been the best of adopters lately. Sorry, and I'd fully understand if you want to end your adoption. No hard feelings, and I'd still answer any questions you have (please do).

If you do want to continue the adoption, please complete the new assignments. Thanks. Xiner (talk, email) 01:33, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Xiner, I think you've done a great job! It is I who hasn't. I've just been so busy and unable to put the time in to fully take advantage of the tasks you layout. I will be able to soon though. - WilsonjrWikipedia (talk) 23:46, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, good to know. I know you have a fairly important day job, so take your time. Xiner (talk, email) 19:45, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
